    海へまっすぐ下る石畳の坂。坂の正面に港と摩周丸を望む構図は、函館を代表する写真スポットです。冬はロードヒーティングで雪でも歩きやすくなっています。A stone-paved slope running straight down to the sea, framing the port and the moored ship Mashu-maru, one of Hakodate's most photographed views. Heated paving keeps it walkable even in snow.

    旧函館区公会堂 Old Public Hall

    1910年築、青灰色と黄色が映える左右対称の洋館。保存修理を終えて公開され、バルコニーから基坂と港を見下ろせます。A symmetrical 1910 hall in striking blue-grey and yellow, reopened after restoration. Its balcony looks down Motoizaka toward the harbor.

    道幅およそ36mの広い坂。冬のイルミネーションの舞台にもなり、坂の上から港と光の列を一望できます。A broad slope about 36 m wide, lit up in winter; from the top you take in the harbor and ribbons of light together.

坂は思いのほか急です。歩きやすい靴がおすすめ。教会は礼拝・行事の時間帯は見学を控え、内部撮影の可否は各教会の掲示に従いましょう。The slopes are steeper than they look, so wear comfortable shoes. Please avoid visiting churches during services, and follow each church's notices on interior photography.

    トラピスチヌ修道院 Trappistine Convent

    1898年創建、日本最初の女子観想修道院。前庭と資料室のみ見学でき、修道女手づくりのマダレナケーキが人気です（院内は非公開）。湯の川温泉から車ですぐ。Japan's first contemplative convent for women (1898). Only the front garden and a small museum are open (the cloister is closed); the nuns' madeleine cakes are a favorite. A short drive from Yunokawa Onsen.

    恵山つつじ公園 Mt. Esan Azalea Park

    市街から車で約1時間の活火山。5月下旬〜6月上旬には約60万本のツツジが山肌を赤く染め、晩秋には紅葉も。つつじまつりは例年5月下旬〜6月上旬です。An active volcano about an hour's drive east. In late May to early June some 600,000 azaleas turn the slopes red, with autumn color to follow. (Azalea Festival: typically late May to early June.)

    しかべ間歇泉公園 Shikabe Geyser Park

    函館から車で約1時間。約10〜15分ごとに高さ約15mまで噴き上がる間歇泉を間近で見られる道の駅で、温泉蒸し体験や足湯もあります。営業内容は変わることがあるため、お出かけ前に公式でご確認ください。About an hour's drive away: a roadside station where a geyser erupts to roughly 15 m every 10 to 15 minutes, with steam-cooking and a foot bath. 王道・市電で1日The Classic Day

  1. 08:00

    函館朝市で海鮮丼の朝食。駅二市場でいか釣り体験も。Seafood-bowl breakfast at the morning market; try squid fishing at Ekini Market.

  2. 09:30

    市電で五稜郭公園前へ。五稜郭とタワーから星形を一望。Tram to Goryokaku; see the star-shaped fort from the tower.

  3. 11:30

    十字街で下車、ベイエリアの金森赤レンガ倉庫を散策＆食べ歩き。Off at Jujigai; stroll and graze around the Red Brick Warehouses.

  4. 13:00

    元町さんぽ。基坂・領事館・公会堂・八幡坂・教会群へ。Motomachi walk: Motoizaka, the consulate, public hall, Hachiman-zaka and the churches.

  5. 16:00

    市電で湯の川温泉へ。足湯や立ち寄り湯でひと休み。Tram to Yunokawa Onsen; rest at a foot bath or day-use spring.

    ロープウェイで函館山へ。日没後の夜景を楽しんで、下山後に夕食。Ropeway up Mt. Hakodate for the after-dark view, then dinner.

2日2 Days

市内＋足をのばす2日City & Beyond

  1. 1日目Day 1

    朝市 → 五稜郭 → ベイエリアで昼食 → 元町さんぽ → 湯の川温泉に宿泊。晴れていれば夜景へ。Morning market → Goryokaku → lunch in the bay → Motomachi walk → stay at Yunokawa. Night view if skies are clear.

  2. 2日目Day 2

    大沼公園で湖畔散策 → 森駅周辺で名物いかめし → 市内に戻りお土産。高原の展望台は冬期閉鎖のため、冬はトラピスチヌ＋市内プランに。Lakeside walk at Onuma → ikameshi near Mori Station → back to town for souvenirs. (Plateau lookouts close in winter, so swap for the convent and city in cold months.)

夜景は天候しだい。曇りや霧の予報なら、昼の元町・坂歩きを厚めにして、夜は無理をしない判断も。The night view depends on weather. If clouds or fog are forecast, lean into the daytime slopes of Motomachi and don't force the climb.

函館山・夜景の登り方Getting Up Mt. Hakodate

夜景の名所・函館山へは、いくつかの行き方があります。季節や時間で使える手段が変わるので、正直にまとめました。There are several ways up to the famous night view. What's available changes with the season and time of day, here's an honest rundown.

ロープウェイRopeway

山麓駅から山頂まで約3分。最も手軽ですが、夜景の時間帯は混み合い、待つこともあります。About 3 minutes from base to summit, the easiest option, though it gets crowded at night-view time.

登山バスBus

函館駅前やベイエリアから山頂へ直通。冬期（おおむね11月中旬〜4月中旬）は登山道閉鎖のため運休します。Direct from Hakodate Station and the bay to the summit. Suspended in winter (roughly mid-Nov to mid-Apr) when the road closes.

車・レンタカーCar

登山道は冬期通行止め。さらに夏〜秋は夜間のマイカー規制があります。時間帯は年により変わるため、必ず最新情報をご確認ください。The road is closed in winter, and private cars are restricted at night in summer to autumn. Hours vary by year, so always check the latest.

徒歩On foot

無雪期のみ。登山道は片道1時間ほど。夜の下りはバスかロープウェイがおすすめです。Snow-free months only; about an hour each way. For the descent after dark, the bus or ropeway is wiser.

朝市でいか釣りSquid fishing

朝市の駅二市場で、自分で釣ったイカをその場でさばいてもらえます。早朝から営業、種類は時期で替わります。At Ekini Market, catch your own squid and have it prepared on the spot. Open from early morning; the catch changes by season.

レンタサイクルRental bikes

ベイエリアや元町めぐりに便利。坂が多いので、電動アシスト車だと安心です。Handy for the bay and Motomachi. With all those slopes, an e-assist bike is the safer pick.

湯の川の足湯Free foot bath

湯の川温泉には無料で立ち寄れる足湯があります。市電でアクセスでき、旅の締めにぴったり。Yunokawa Onsen has a free public foot bath, reachable by tram, a lovely way to end a day.

ベイの食べ歩きBayside grazing

赤レンガ倉庫まわりで、ラッキーピエロやスナッフルス、やきとり弁当をつまみ歩き。坂歩きの合間に。Graze on Lucky Pierrot, Snaffle's and yakitori-bento around the warehouses, a nice break between slopes.

函館へのアクセスGetting to Hakodate

飛行機・新幹線・フェリーで。市内は市電が便利です。Reach Hakodate by air, shinkansen or ferry; the streetcar makes the city easy to explore.

飛行機By Air

函館空港へ。東京（羽田）から約1時間20分。空港から市内までは車・バスで約20分です。Fly into Hakodate Airport, about 1h20m from Tokyo (Haneda), then roughly 20 minutes by bus or car into the city.

新幹線By Shinkansen

北海道新幹線で新函館北斗駅へ。東京から約4時間、「はこだてライナー」に乗り換えて函館駅まで約20分。Take the Hokkaido Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto (about 4 hours from Tokyo), then the Hakodate Liner about 20 minutes to Hakodate Station.

フェリーBy Ferry

青森・大間から津軽海峡フェリーで。青森からは約3時間40分、車ごと渡れます。Cross on the Tsugaru Strait Ferry from Aomori or Oma, about 3h40m from Aomori. You can bring your car.

市内の観光は市電（路面電車）が主役。大沼・松前など周辺へ足をのばすなら、JRやレンタカーが便利です。Within the city the streetcar is your main ride. For day trips out to Onuma or Matsumae, JR trains or a rental car work best.

気候・服装の目安Weather & what to wear

12〜3月は氷点下・積雪で、防寒着と滑りにくい靴を。4〜5月は雪解け〜桜、朝晩は冷えます。6〜8月は本州より涼しく快適、夜は一枚羽織りを。9〜11月は紅葉、後半は冷え込みます。Dec to Mar is below freezing and snowy (warm coat, non-slip shoes). Apr to May brings the thaw and blossoms with cool mornings. Jun to Aug is mild, with a light layer for evenings. Sep to Nov turns crisp toward autumn.

市電の乗り方Riding the streetcar

後ろのドアから乗り、前のドアで降りて支払います（交通系ICも利用可）。1日乗車券は大人800円。通常運賃は250〜300円なので、4回以上乗る日はお得です。Board at the rear, pay as you exit at the front (IC cards accepted). A one-day pass is ¥800 for adults; single rides are ¥250 to 300, so it pays off from four rides up.

空港から市内へFrom the airport

シャトルバスでJR函館駅前まで約20分（700円ほど）。湯の川温泉やベイエリア方面に停まる便もあります。A shuttle bus reaches JR Hakodate Station in about 20 minutes (around ¥700). Some services also stop near Yunokawa Onsen and the bay area.

定番のお土産Souvenirs to look for

がごめ昆布のほかにも、マルセイバターサンド（六花亭）、トラピストクッキー、スナッフルスのチーズオムレット、隣町・森のいかめしなどが函館の定番です。市内の店舗や空港でも手に入ります。Beyond gagome kombu, look for Rokkatei's Marusei butter sandwiches, Trappist cookies, Snaffle's cheese omelets, and ikameshi from neighboring Mori, all available in town and at the airport.

函館がほこる「ねばり」の昆布。 Gagome kombu,

函館・南茅部の海でとれるがごめ昆布は、表面の網目（がごめ）模様が名前の由来。水に浸すと、ほかの昆布にはない強い粘りが生まれます。 Harvested off Hakodate's Minamikayabe coast, gagome kombu takes its name from the basket-weave pattern on its surface. Soak it in water and it turns remarkably sticky, far more than ordinary kombu.

粘りの主成分は、フコイダンとアルギン酸。だしはもちろん、松前漬けやとろろ昆布、昆布茶として親しまれてきた、函館の食卓に欠かせない食材です。 That stickiness comes from fucoidan and alginic acid. Beyond dashi, it has long been enjoyed as matsumae-zuke, shaved tororo kombu, and kombu tea, a staple of the Hakodate table.
